Where do mosquitoes go during winter?

Even though the bug bites have decreased and we don’t see them, they are still out there, even during winter.

Some Mosquitoes will lay winter eggs which stay in the soil until spring.  In fall, the female will lay her eggs in areas where the ground is moist and when the spring temperatures begin to raise the eggs will hatch.

Some Mosquitoes can survive during winter in the larval stage.  But all larvae require water.

Many Mosquitoes live as adults through winter.  In fall, the mosquitoes mate and the male dies. Only the female mosquitoes can “hibernate” during winter.  When bug season arts again in March the females must find their first meal of blood to develop her eggs.  So when we are outside enjoying our warm spring weather, watch out because mother mosquitoes are on the lookout for blood.  Once fed, she will lay he eggs in any standing water she can find.

Bug Free Christmas

There’s nothing like the fresh evergreen scent of a live Christmas tree in your living room.  But as you begin decorating don’t be surprised to find some bugs that might be joining you this holiday.

Our homes are NOT the appropriate habitat for these insects, and if they are inside they won’t be staying long.  Lacking food and humidity make it difficult for most insects to survive. Most Christmas tree insects will die soon after moving indoors.  But they can be drawn to the still water in the tree stand.

Christmas trees attract a variety of biting flies and insects that may be only visible in large numbers.  Aphids are the most common pests of evergreen trees.  The warm conditions in homes may cause aphid eggs to hatch.

Before Bringing your Christmas tree Indoors, Check for bugs:

1. Look for signs of aphids or other small insects.  Be sure to examine under branches.

2.  Shake it vigorously.  Check branches for eggs.

3.  MOST IMPORTANTLY: do not spray aerosol pesticides on your Christmas tree.  These products are unsafe and flammable!  It is much safer for your health to hang a MOSQUITO ELIMINATOR on your tree and enjoy your Christmas bug free!
